Kodou is healed thanks to the rejuvenating waters. He recalls a time when he was summoned at Ashina Castle. On his way upstairs, he is annoyed that he is ordered to assist Doujun with his experiments, and is angry that a 250 years old clan is forced to take order from a 20 years old clan. He sees Genichiro Ashina going down the stairs, Isshin's adopted son, and feels that he can easily take him out with his sword, but before he can realize it, Genichiro gets close to him, causing him to wonder if Genichiro felt his bloodlust. Looking at him, Genichiro recognizes that he is Takamine, and tells him that he is in his care.
Hanbei finds Kodou, who sees that Hanbei has Takamine's sword, so he guesses that his father is dead. That reaffirms his belief that he must be the one to restore glory to his clan and intends to bring Isshin and Genichiro's heads as gifts to the internal minister. Kodou and Hanbei starts fighting and Kodou takes the upper hand and ends up ripping Hanbei open, causing a centipede to come out of him. He grabs it, and while preparing to rip it out, he tells Hanbei that power is everything, and even if power is no longer measured by sword skill, if he is undying, he could still accomplish everything. Shoukichi then shows up, throws a bottle of oil at Kodou and then lit a fire. Kodou is burning, but still turns and cuts down Shoukichi. As the fire goes out, Hanbei had healed as well.
