Description[]

Jinzaemon Kumano (熊野陣左衛門, Kumano Jinzaemon) is a samurai with the duty of patrolling the moat of Ashina Castle.

He ventures into Ashina Depths in search of the shamisen player, whose melody bewitched him.

If lured into Doujun's hands, he'll become a test patient for the Waters of Rejuvenation and end up a red-eyed madman.

He'll attempt to kill Wolf, should he murder the shamisen player first.

Location[]

If left arriving at Mibu Village:

If lured to the Abandoned Dungeon:

If O'Rin of the Water is killed before talking to him:

Progression #1 (Mibu Village)[]

Ashina Castle (Ashina Reservoir)[]

From the Ashina Reservoir Sculptor's Idol, take the left and grapple onto the two branches to get atop the wall. Go past the Watcher and grapple onto the next branch to meet Jinzaemon. Greet him to start his quest. Talking to him again, he'll reveal that he wants to follow the sound of a shamisen coming from Ashina Depths: if you have received the Surgeon's Bloody Letter from Doujun, you'll be able to send Jinzaemon to him by choosing to "Lure to the Abandoned Dungeon".

Ashina Depths (Bottomless Hole)[]

(Optional) Walk past the Bottomless Hole Sculptor's Idol to meet Jinzaemon for the second time. Talking to him here will once again give the option to send him to Doujun, if the requirement is met.

Ashina Depths (Hidden Forest)[]

(Optional) Grapple past the Guardian Ape's Burrow to find Jinzaemon sitting on a rock by the entrance to the Hidden Forest. Talking to him, he'll tell Wolf that he finally caught a glimpse of the woman playing the shamisen and that his father warned him to never enter the mist shrouded village beneath Ashina. This is the last chance to lure him to the Abandoned Dungeon.

Ashina Depths (Water Mill)[]

Once his quest is started, unless sent to Doujun, he'll always end up near the Water Mill Sculptor's Idol, even if Sekiro has not interacted with him in his previous two locations. Once O'Rin of the Water is defeated, he'll thank Wolf for having brought her muse to him and will gift the shinobi a Jinza Jizo's Statue, before passing away.

Progression #2 (Abandoned Dungeon)[]

Ashina Castle (Abandoned Dungeon Entrance)[]

If sent to Doujun, the surgeon will gift Lump of Fat Wax [x3] to Wolf. (Optional) Jinzaemon will be found in the cell behind him, accessible only after acquiring the Mibu Breathing Technique from the Corrupted Monk by diving past the Underground Waterway Sculptor's Idol and taking the left until a spot to grapple onto appears: jumping over the rockwall will lead Sekiro down to a catatonic Jinzaemon, who can only groan and grunt.

Upon returning to Doujun, he'll now ask Wolf for the Red Eyes of a Carp found at the bottom of the lake of Mibu Village.

Given the Red Carp Eyes, Doujun will hand out Lump of Grave Wax [x2] in return.

Doujun will now be found crying in Jinzaemon's cell, while the samurai, now driven mad by his Red Eyes, has been moved to the first island past the Underground Waterway Sculptor's Idol. Killing him here will reward Wolf with an unique Red Lump.

Progression #3 (Hostile)[]

Ashina Castle (Ashina Reservoir)[]

If Wolf has killed O'Rin of the Water without ever talking to Jinzaemon in Ashina Reservoir, upon meeting him he'll draw his sword on Sekiro to take revenge. If killed here, he won't drop anything.

Behaviour and Tactics[]

  • Perilous Grab: This attack is almost always performed when Sekiro's Posture is broken and he falls to his knees. Performing a safety roll backward is the best way to avoid this attack.
  • Perilous Low Wide Swing: a wide sweeping attack across the ground. As with all unblockable sweeps, this cannot be parried, but can only be countered by a jump-kick.
  • Perilous Thrust: a well telegraphed thrust attack. As with all unblockable thrusts, this attack can be parried, but only with a perfect deflection. Performing a Mikiri Counter is the safest and most effective method of dealing with this attack.
  • Perilous Thrust Combo: two vertical slashes and a Perilous Thrust.
  • Chasing Slice: Jinzaemon sheathes his weapon, entering a crouched stance, and will then rush forwards with a vertical slice.
  • Jab and Kick: hits his target with the hilt of his sword, following up with a kick. He may follow up with Perilous Low Wide Swing. The kick deals no vitality damage and will simply knock the player over if it connects.
  • Jump Slash: leaps into the air and follows up with a downward overhead slash. Can be avoided horizontally.
  • Overhead Swing: a single overhead swing. This attack has a greater amount of recovery frames and fewer follow-ups than most of his attacks, and as such, is a safe attack to retaliate after. Can also be avoided by dashing to the sides.
  • Recover: Jinzaemon jumps backwards and during the charge becomes engulfed in a bright aura, that will restore his Posture significantly. Being interrupted at any point before the end of this move will prevent any Posture regeneration.
  • Shoulder Check and Slash: Jinzaemon leads with a blunt shoulder check attack and follows up with a horizontal swipe. Unlike the kick, this shoulder check does vitality damage if not blocked or deflected.
  • Two-swing Slash: consecutive swings side by side.

Fights exactly like a Samurai General Mini-Boss.

If faced after he gained Red Eyes, he'll be much stronger and resistant, but the fire of the Flame Vent can be used to scare him momentarily.

Consuming a Gachiin's Sugar before diving in the waters of the Abandoned Dungeon makes it possible to perform a Backstab Deathblow on him and even turn him into an ally through the Puppeteer Ninjutsu against Doujun.

Keeping constant pressure on him will fill his Posture Bar fast: after 3 or 4 hits, he'll perform a deflection and will follow it up mostly with either an Overhead Swing or a Jump Slash. Note that, while the latter can be interrupted by landing enough attacks in time, the former can't.

When far away from the player, he often starts charging up a Chasing Slice while approaching the player: this can be interrupted with a properly timed katana swing or a Shuriken.

Dodge his swipes backward and his overhead swings to the left.

When his Posture Bar is nearly full, he'll dash backward and attempt to peform his Recover ability to restore his Posture, so it's important to always be ready to interrupt him by either catching up to him or by using Shurikens.

First encounter Jinzaemon: Ahhh... Ahhh... It truly... stirs my soul... Beautiful... And yet, somehow sad... As if it yearns, it calls for someone...
Choosing "Ignore" Jinzaemon: Mmm... Please... Who are you calling for...? Let me hear it one more time...
Choosing "Greet him" Wolf: Hey.

Jinzaemon: Who are you calling for...? Let me hear it one more time...
Wolf: Hey, you.
Jinzaemon: Wha-?! (Coughing) My name is Jinzaemon Kumano. My duty is to patrol the moat. Hmm... I've not seen you around before. Which clan are you?
Wolf: ... I cannot say.
Jinzaemon: You cannot say... you say? Hmm... So you are a shinobi, then?
Wolf: I cannot say.
Jinzaemon: ... your manners could use some work. No matter. If you're a shinobi, I won't press any further.

Speaking again Jinzaemon: (Coughs) ... Shinobi... have you ever heard someone playing the shamisen around here? I followed the sound and it led me to this well.
Answering "I have not" Wolf: I have not.

Jinzaemon: Is... that so? I thought since you're a shinobi, you might know... Hmm... I wonder who that melody calls to...? I don't know why, but I can't stop thinking about it. Ah! No... it's nothing. Please forget I ever spoke of it.

Speaking again Jinzaemon: Shinobi, have you heard the shamisen yet? I followed the sound and it led me to this well.
"Suggest travel destination: Abandoned Dungeon" Wolf: Try the abandoned dungeon.

Jinzaemon: You believe it came from there?
Wolf: Yes.
Jinzaemon: I have heard that the well is connected to that dungeon... If I were to follow it, I just might find the one playing that melody... I'm sorry, I'm being rude...I lost my composure. Hmm... The abandoned dungeon, you say...? It is my job to investigate anything suspicious. I will look into this should I find a free moment.

Attacked Jinzaemon:
  • Ugh, would you stop that?!
  • Guh... Shinobi, what are you doing?!
Turned hostile (before greeting) Jinzaemon: I don't want to kill you... But you persist!
Turned hostile (after greeting) Jinzaemon: I see... You are jealous 'cause you cannot hear the melody, are you not?!
Killing Wolf (before greeting while O'Rin is alive) Jinzaemon: Shinobi... I will mourn your passing...
Killing Wolf (after greeting while O'Rin is alive) Jinzaemon: ...no appreciation for her beauty!
Killed (before greeting while O'Rin is alive) Jinzaemon: Shinobi... Why... would you...
Killed (after greeting while O'Rin is alive) Jinzaemon: Ahh... I can hear it... She's... calling...me...
Approaching with O'Rin dead Jinzaemon: Why... Why can't I hear... the melody...? Wait... was it you? You did this...? The melody... Give it back!!
Infected with Dragonrot Jinzaemon:(Wheezing...)

Wolf:

  • Hey... What's wrong...?
  • Jinzaemon... You too...

Jinzaemon: Shinobi...
Wolf: Don't force yourself to speak.
Jinzaemon: Right... I must follow... follow the... melody... The melody... it calls to me... (sings melody) I can... I can hear it, but...

"Take coughed up blood sample" Jinzaemon: (Wheezing and coughing up blood)

Wolf: I'm taking a blood sample.
Jinzaemon: (Wheeze... Wheeze... Cough, cough.)
Wolf: ... Now to bring this to Lady Emma.

First encounter Jinzaemon: Ahhh... Ahhh... It's faint but... Yes, I can hear it... As if it is......calling out for someone, crying... Perhaps it is calling to...me?
Choosing "Ignore him" Wolf: .........

Jinzaemon: Here and there...yes... I can hear it.

Choosing "Greet him" Wolf: Hey...

Jinzaemon: Every now and then...yes... I can hear it. Give me a sign... Is it me you're calling to...?
Wolf: What's wrong?
Jinzaemon: Hmm? Ah, if it isn't the Shinobi. Following the sound brought me here. Can you hear it? It's faint... Carried by the wind... It's coming from this hole. You hear it, do you not?
Wolf: I hear nothing.
Jinzaemon: .........I see. Perhaps I alone can hear it? Ah... Nothing else matters... I must follow that melody. That melody calls to me. At least... I believe it does.

Speaking again Jinzaemon: I must follow it. That melody... I am sure it calls me... How I might pursue it...? Shinobi, what do you think?
Choosing "Lure to Abandoned Dungeon" Jinzaemon: If I go to the Abandoned Dungeon, I can pursue the melody. I can find out who it's calling for. Ahh... Ahh...
Choosing "I have not" Wolf: Don't know.

Jinzaemon: ...Is that so... Then please, leave me alone. I'd like to listen to it on my own.

Attacked Jinzaemon:
  • Ugh, would you stop that?!
  • Guh... Shinobi, what are you doing?!
Turned hostile Jinzaemon: I see... You are jealous 'cause you cannot hear the melody, are you not?!
Killing Wolf Jinzaemon: ...no appreciation for her beauty!
When killed Jinzaemon: Ahh... I can hear it... She's... calling...me...
Approaching with O'Rin dead Jinzaemon: Why... Why can't I hear... the melody...? Wait... was it you? You did this...? The melody... Give it back!!

"Take coughed up blood sample" Jinzaemon: (Wheezing and coughing up blood)

Wolf: I'm taking a blood sample.
Jinzaemon: (Wheeze... Wheeze... Cough, cough.)
Wolf: ... Now to bring this to Lady Emma.

First encounter Jinzaemon: Ahh... She's gone... But she was here just moments ago!
Choosing "Ignore him" Wolf: .........

Jinzaemon: Ahh... Me...? Was she calling me?

Choosing "Greet him" Wolf: You...

Jinzaemon: ...Hm? Ahh, Shinobi... Listen! I finally saw her. The shamisen player... was a woman. I only saw her from afar... But I could tell... A beautiful, yet fleeting presence... Ahh... I should've asked if she was calling to me! And before I knew it she'd disappeared into the mist.

Speaking again Jinzaemon: (sniffs) Now that I think it over... My father told me stories about a hidden town shrouded deeply in mist. An ominous town... Don't ever go there... he said. ..........But, that doesn't matter to me now. Now, there's a thick, misty forest in my way. If I could only figure out how to get through it an find that shamisen player...
Choosing "Lure to Abandoned Dungeon" Jinzaemon: Much obliged. I will visit the Dungeon, as you have so kindly suggested.
Choosing "I have not" Wolf:.........

Jinzaemon: Ahh... It's coming from deep in the fog... that melody is calling me.

Wolf: I'm taking a blood sample.
Jinzaemon: (Wheeze... Wheeze... Cough, cough.)
Wolf: ... Now to bring this to Lady Emma.

Speaking Jinzaemon: Urhh... Is that you, Shinobi? I was so taken by the melody, I did not see you coming. Ahhh... I can hear it. I am sure the shamisen player is just beyond here... I knew it... She's been waiting for me the whole time...
Speaking again (while O'Rin is alive) Jinzaemon: Ahh... I knew it... She's been waiting for me the whole time...
Speaking (with O'Rin defeated) Jinzaemon: Is that you? Are you there... Shinobi?

Wolf: Yes.
Jinzaemon: I must give you my thanks, Shinobi.
Wolf: Your thanks?
Jinzaemon: You brought the shamisen player to me. Just a moment ago... she caressed me... While playing her sweet melody. It was a different song than before. Like a lullaby... A peaceful, warm... melody. She spoke to me as she played "Thank you for coming to me," she said. It turns out she WAS calling to me this whole time. Shinobi...please...take this. (Gives Jinza's Jizo Statue [x1]))
I'm... So very tired now...

Inside the cell Jinzaemon: (Sickly groaning)
